Recently, I was asked in an interview if I had any advice for collectors. I'm a collector myself, so yes. I do. But I'm also an artist and I have also run galleries. So I have three perspectives on collecting. Here is my brief, but important answer.
As a collector myself, I buy art that I can’t stop thinking about. Usually, I see something I like and then I give it a few days to see if it still lingers in my head. If it does, I buy it. My most recent purchase was a ceramic Candy Necklace from Simon Lewis Wards. I waited a long time before I bought it, but I’m so glad that I did finally get it. It makes me smile every day.
From an artist perspective, I know how it feels to be devalued, so I would never ask an artist for a discount when buying art. Their prices are their prices and I would never want to imply that I think a work of art is less valuable than its retail price.
Since I have worked as a gallery manager in the past, I understand what it takes to run a gallery. There is a reason why galleries take a cut of the sale- it’s a lot of work. So, I have a lot of respect for the galleries that support me.
So, if you purchase a work from me, great. If you purchase from one of my galleries, great. All I want is for you to love and appreciate the art and craftsmanship.
